What is Liposarcoma?

Liposarcoma is a rare form of cancerous soft tissue sarcoma that develops in your fat cells. In most patients, Liposarcoma develops in the limbs or abdomen, but it can appear in the fatty tissue of any part of your body. It can also affect patients of any age, though it usually develops in older adults.

The symptoms of Liposarcoma differ depending on where in your body it’s located. Liposarcoma of the limbs may appear as a lump in your skin that grows over time, causing pain, swelling, numbness, and weakness in the limb. Liposarcoma of the abdomen can also cause pain and swelling, in addition to symptoms such as constipation, an early feeling of fullness when eating a meal, and blood that appears in your stool or vomit. Liposarcoma survival rates vary based on its type, location, and stage are the start of treatment.

What causes Liposarcoma?

Liposarcoma tends to appear in people aged 50 to 65. Genetic syndromes, radiation exposure via cancer treatment, exposure to certain chemicals, and damage to your lymph system are all potential risk factors.

How is Liposarcoma treated?

Liposarcoma is often treated through surgical removal of the tumor followed by radiation, chemotherapy, or both to kill any cancer cells remaining in the surrounding tissue. In some patients, radiation or chemotherapy may be recommended before surgery to reduce the size of the tumor, particularly if it’s located near vital organs in a way that may make surgery more of a risk.
